Punk music can be divided into one of three sub genres– Street , Hardcore , and Pop. Also known as Oi!, Street Punk is punk rock by the working class, for the working class. It originated in the UKs under ground, and brought a message of rebellion to those who felt opressed by their government. It is often unfairly connected to racist skinhead groups, and though there are a few Nazi related bands they make up only a very small portion of the Oi! Scene. Oi! Punk is best represented by bands such as: The Sex Pistols, The Casualties and Sham 69. Hardcore is the uncompromising punk attitude combined with a sense of social activism. It’s an intelligent movement in punk rock music characterized by a deep anger at the status quo. The hardcore scene will never die as long as individualistic thought can survive. Hardcore is best represented by bands like: Sick Of It All, Blood for Blood, and Madball. Pop punk is probably the most popular form of Punk today. Pop punk combines the catchy melodies and hooks of pop music with the hard guitars and speedy tempos of punk music. It offers a motivational look at growing up; offering hope and faith that things will eventually get better to angst ridden preteens and young teenagers. Pop punk is best represented by is founders Green Day, and Blink 182. Its more recent successes include Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Mest, and Simple Plan. Punk music as a whole is a very diverse genre and can appeal to music fans of all ages and interests.
